| Humankind’s First Medicines
I’ve been reading a lot about essential oils and found out they were very likely one of humankind’s first medicines. There are translations of Chinese manuscripts and Egyptian hieroglyphics that tell us that priests and physicians used plant oils to heal the sick thousands of years before Christ. The usefulness of essential oils seemed to have been forgotten in our society, though, until recently. Revival of Natural Healing Using Aromatherapy I’ve been hearing more and more about how there seems to be a revival of aromatherapy, a natural healing therapy involving the wearing and inhalation, or ingestion in cooking or in supplements, of aromatic plant oils. Essential oils are the highly concentrated liquids that are distilled from plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, roots and seeds. They are essentially (pun intended) the blood of the plant, protecting it from bacterial and viral infections, cleansing breaks in the plant tissue and delivering oxygen and nutrients into the plant cells. Researchers are now able to analyze the oils to see how they work and have found that essential oils have many common properties with human blood. Essential oils are compatible with human protein and are readily identified and accepted by the body. The oxygenating molecules of the oils help transport the nutrients into the cells of the human body. Also, our bodies have an electrical balance that may be enhanced by the bioelectrical frequency of the essential oils. Clinical research has shown that essential oils can help create an environment in which disease, bacteria, virus, and fungus cannot live. In fact, I’ve read that essential oils are routinely being used in European hospitals to disinfect their surgery areas and patients’ rooms. The aromas of the oils, either in individual scents or in blends, are also being used for health effects such as calming the mind or body or easing digestion, to name just a few. In light of the recent outbreaks of West Nile Virus, you might be interested to know that many people use essential oils as an alternative to synthetic DEET (a chemical whose safety is uncertain) to repel mosquitoes.
